Electric car registrations up, a lot, in November
The UK’s electric car market glided into the fast lane in November, as registrations grew by over 50% on November 2023. Battery electric cars continue to be the fastest growing part of the market.
Electric cars are enjoying a run of strong sales
Registrations of electric cars are growing strongly, again. November was the fourth month in a row with a market share of above 20%. Much of this was driven by strong results from Tesla, but it is a mark of how much the market has changed in 2024 that a strong month for Tesla still only sees them take 12% of the market. That is testament to the range of electric models and price points available to consumers from other brands.
ZEV mandate facing credit oversupply
The UK’s Zero Emissions Vehicle mandate for cars is behind much of the strong sales figures in recent months. It came into force in January, and since then more brands have been working to bring models to market at more competitive price points. We project that by the end of the year there will be a healthy surplus of compliance credits, reducing compliance costs for those who have struggled to meet the targets.
